What's the word on Shared IP websites?

How does google treat sites that share an IP?

To the best of my knowledge, Google doesn't care about whether your IP is unique or shared. Virtual hosted sites get indexed without problems so long as Googlebot can find the site. Where penalties are concerned, Google is on record saying they penalize by domain name, not by IP.

what about cross linking sites related sites that are on the same server and sharing an ip address?

I am currently in the process of moving some of my sites that were on a web hosting account over to my own dedicated server. I heard that there are some issues with sites cross linking that are on the same ip set (I forget the terminology.)

I don't believe there is any evidence that excessive crosslinking (making a closed network) of sites on one IP number is any more dangerous than creating a closed network of sites on different IP numbers. The advice on crosslinking is: Avoid doing it to excess. For those who want to crosslink anyway, make sure you have a substantial percentage of inbound links from sites outside that network you've created. What that "substantial percentage" is, is unknown. Maybe GoogleGuy would care to chip in with a precise figure on this. ;)
