I've had several new links pointing to my web site over the past few weeks, and although the linking sites were definitely crawled during this last "update," but Google still isn't picking them up. I assume they have to be there for a while before Google will acknowledge them?

Anyway, asking everyone in general, how long have you found that it takes for a link to be counted?

I think you're confusing "update" with "crawl". They are different and don't happen at the same time.

The main crawl is the regular approx monthly visit from googlebot where Google takes most pages from the web. (Many sites with regularly updated content get daily or weekly visits from GoogleBot to some pages, but that's not the main crawl)

The update generally happens 3-4 weeks later, and is when Google incorporates the previously crawled pages into the search index.

Your inbound links on other website pages need to have been crawled and then updated in the search index before you'll see them take effect in Google.

If your new links were just crawled in the last week or so, then they should show up in the next Google update that will probably happen towards the end of this month.
