I am wondering when checking on link popularity how some websites have literally hundreds of links on google while others who work just as hard trying to get all these links on google (like myself)cannot?
My website is well rounded and rated a 6, but yet google has picked up only 42 links out of maybe several hundred that I submitted to. So what's the deal?
I hope you understand what I am talking about because I am new at the SEO game.
Is there any advise as to how they do it?
Thanks!
When trying to figure out how many sites Google has recorded as links I search for the URL of the site and then click on the link to find sites containing that term. You have to deduct your own sites google has included in the list however.
Re some getting massive links recorded--if you check the SERPS more links doesn't necessarily mean higher in the SERPS. I believe it is quality links and a quality site that boost one's rank in the serps.

Is your content worth linking to? Is it unique enough so that anyone linking to other sites see a reason to also link to yours?
If your content is good enough, then you won't even have to go hunting for links, you will get thousands with no effort.
If it is just another site selling widgets, then you need to give people some incentive to link to you. Link exchanges will work for some, for others you will have to pay them.
