For "consideration as their primary search engine", Yahoo scored 61 percent; Microsoft, 38 percent; and Google, 84 percent. Last June, the SEs scored 50 percent, 30 percent and 86 percent, respectively.
One factor in MSN's rise was their better delineation of sponsored listings.
Devil's Advocate hat!
>links from government and educational websites should be treated as more valuable than links from commercial websites
Why do you feel this to be correct?
There must be a huge percentage of commerical searchers using the web?
Shoppers/importers/exporters/wholesalers/manufacturers/agents.
My widget trade derives huge amounts of traffic from searchers such as these however we also provide a lot of educational and technical information which also means we do get a lot of government and educational searchers.
It took a long of time and money but it does make us the authority site for both therefore it is very difficult for me to disprove your claim.
It is all backlink/anchor text based. Google has a slightly better dup content filter than yahoo and msn comes last.
To be honest there is not much to choose between them, and so it should be. There are only a handfull interpretations of the results.
When I look at all the new start up engines e.g Gigablast etc, I see the same thing, backlinks! All engines are based on this algo. For me it is great, I do not need to think about SEO for differnt types of engines.
Going back to what I said earlier that all my sites have seen gains from msn and yahoo. This could because all my sites are in travel. It could be that I have got better SERPS in yahoo and MSN as they have moved towards a backlink based algo ( I never used to bother checking my SERPS there before).
Anyway the playing field needs to be more even, so I hope the gains continue for other engines!
We saw this stupidity in 1999-2000 when e companies could do no wrong. Google's market reach and business model doesn't justify a $200 per share stock price. Not even $20. Google's only claim to fame is that it can sort sites much better than the rest of SEs, yet they do nothing for a serious bug hurting their model and thousands of innocent people who make a living online.
Google has lost a lot of my respect, not because my site has been hit, but because it has been hit for of something I didn't do, and especially because Google knows about it and is doing nothing. Hey Google, with power comes responsibility. If I had hidden text, cloaking or FFA galore links and I got caught, I wouldn't be mad.
the webstats never lie. I see no gain at all. Google is still dominating in my three various fields, and the others aren't catching up.
Webstats don't always paint a complete picture. Are you ranking better in Google, thus getting more traffic from them? Not doubting you, just playing devil's advocate.
