Static IP with Dynamic DNS

Does the use affect position in SERPs

Hello,

This is my first post...

I am running a website on a T1 in my house using a static IP address. I currently utilize a dynamic DNS service for DNS so that I can easily switch to a backup data line in case the T1 goes down.

The website is included in the google index (Homepage PR5) but we still struggle for traffic. The site has been online for a few years.

Here are my questions...

Does google penalize sites that utilize dynamic DNS even if using a static IP?

Can the choice of ISP (the provider of the T1) have a negative affect on postition in SERPs?

Is anyone out there generating significant traffic from google using dynamic DNS with or without a static IP?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

Welcome to Webmasterworld.

Given the DNS propogates so rapidly nowadays why bother with dynamic DNS. Changes I have made to various Sites DNS have propogated across the web ( and google picked up the change ) in minutes.

My advice would be to move to normal DNS setup and if you want to have a secondary location for your pages set up do so. The advantage of a secondary location is you also have a backup of your server.

I do not know if Dynamic DNS can cause a problem: The only thing I can foresee is less control over your Class C ip.

Hi David,

Thanks for the welcome!

Eliminating the previously mentioned issues as possibly having a negative affect on position in SERPS would be great. This way I can focus on other potential reasons for lack of performance in the google SERPS.

Anyone else have any insight?

That is a great question. This is something I have always wondered. Since your registered IP becomes an ip of Dynamic DNS, it would be interesting to know.

I guess that I can add in a little bit of insight to say that I have seen sites that were using Dynamic DNS and were not having issues ranking. None personally, but I have seen competitors randomly.

Hopefully someone can give an actual answer

I have a DynamicDNS web site at home with no static ip.

Previously I had a static ip.

The change had no effect. Google has no problem with this.

Hello,

From the first post in this thread...

Can the choice of ISP (the provider of the T1) have a negative affect on postition in SERPs?

In my case I have a T1 at home that is actually identified, using reverse DNS, as a DSL line.

Thanks,
