How Does Google Treat Stale Pages

I have noticed the following about my NEW pages, pages that go up for the first time, a majority of them get top 10 for the phrase I am optimizing for. After about 2 weeks it starts to drop off gradually and settles around page 5 or 7 after 1 to 2 months.

<>
Anyone have any idea why this is happening

Would updating the content on this page periodically help me maintain my ranking?

I heard google likes fresh content, would adding 50 words as a blurb and changing that say every week help stabilize my ranking? in other words is google losing interest because my information becomes stale?

This is very common phenominan. Google picking up the new pages(especially the one's which have a good amount of backward links and have been optimized well),highlight them in some place in the top 20 and then settle them at a place they deserve. Your intial work has been good but the real work starts now.Push it to the top.
