What is Google Suggest?
As you type into the search box, Google Suggest guesses what you're typing and offers suggestions in real time. This is similar to Google's "Did you mean?" feature that offers alternative spellings for your query after you search, except that it works in real time. For example, if you type "bass," Google Suggest might offer a list of refinements that include "bass fishing" or "bass guitar." Similarly, if you type in only part of a word, like "progr," Google Suggest might offer you refinements like "programming," "programming languages," "progesterone," or "progressive." You can choose one by scrolling up or down the list with the arrow keys or mouse.
Sure, great for search researchers, but if that is the only benefit, why would they keep it? A separate engine marketed as "simple enough for everyone to use, not just search experts" might get attention, but that sure will cut down on multiple word searches and pump up the money terms.
New oppty's to spam google: how do I get to the top of the suggestions list? Query bots might work. I can't wait to see seo#1 bumping seo#2 off the bottom of the limited length suggestion list, etc etc
Alphabetical advantages become interesting again... second words starting with "a" come before those starting with "b" etc. Get them onto the list and reap the position rewards.
strong adult filter is on.

"amazon 170.000.000 results
amazon.com 1 results"
I'm not sure why this is seen as odd, but this reveals what lots of people have known for awhile... zillions of people type amazon.com (or any .com) directly into the searchbox. On Google you can't rank for that because they only allow the one result to show, but you can rank for site/company names if you drop the .com, which of course lots of people do too.
More seriously though, it is hard to believe Google would release even to beta anything while their search engine is in a state of disarray.
Hey Google, we don't need keyword toys. We need you to accurately rank web pages in response to search queries. Hello? Fix your broken search engine.
Fix your broken search engine.
No! I spent ages finding out how to make my site work in their broken search engine!
Hmmmmm, could Google make more money if that happened? ;)
It's sad, we all said they would head this way after the stock exchange but inside I think we all kinda hoped they wouldn't.

Well, expect Google's query time to increase significantly tonight as their servers get the biggest beating of their lives ... I know I'm going to be here well into the morning.
I either just made more money, because people will be suggested to multiword keywords; or I just gained compettion from the less clueful who now see what the good terms are.
I can't see this being a good step for webmasters. This means that all traffic will be directed to a few specific terms, obviously the traffic for these sites will increase dramatically while the others disappear off the face of the earth. Now you don't have to work out which terms users want, you have to work out what Google is going to recommend they want ....
I wish Google had a query hotline .... even at £1.50 a minute it's got to be better than "working everything out" ... hey Google - there's another way to squeeze more cash out of us!

[edit reason] please refer to the TOS on adult discussions. We aren't doing those here. [/edit]
One of the great beauties of Google is the clean interface...having masses of words pop up destroys train of thought and is just annoying.
I just hope it never hits default status as happened with predictive texting on mobile phones.
CF
I guess I'm in the small minority that think this is horrid.
No, no. I think it is absolutely horrible from a searchers point of view. But it is fantastic as a research tool. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
I just hope it never hits default status as happened with predictive texting on mobile phones.
Oh I hate that! But I don't think this is the same, it still allows you to type what you want ... some phones don't ....
It must be one of those personal preference things. :)
I'm frustrated actually because now my custom search boxes on my intranet pages all just became "antiquated" in my view. I mean, what kind of search box can't predict a decent portion of the time what I am searching for?
I'm really surpised how many of you actually like this. I guess I'm in the small minority that think this is horrid. Seems to be a terrible example of engineers gone wild & somehow bypassing look/feel & usability people.
Not tomention the "value" of suggestive impressing.
How much would I pay to have "mybrand" appear before the eyes of everyone even starting to type out A-M-A-Z-O.... the psych impact is beyond comprehension, as associative links between the emotional experience of mybrand and he cognitive effort of deliberate seeking/typing AMAZON, which was driven by a desire-like motivation..... psychobabble for sure but way powerful stuff.
Anyone remember the days of typing "NYC" in Wingdings and finding "secret, hidden messages"? I can't wait until the coincidences start to show up in this "predictive texting" on Google... if they are even coincidences ;-)
When i examine key terms in my sectors it almost seems like its returning terms i have searched on previously ( when not using the tool ). Has google cached my searches and is it now presenting itself as some sort of AI engine having mined my data?
When looking at my sector i could not get it to, or had a struggle to get it to suggest a term i had not previously tried. It did to be fair present some. I have the toolbar installed. For sectors i had not searched on it seemed pretty cool, but as i said earlier i wouldnt like to see it live.
I like auto-completion in my email client, I like it in my browser address bar, I like it in my OS X file search, and, I've discovered today that I like it in my search engine.
I like it in my email, browser and OS too because I'm regularly type in the same things.
A search engine is completely different, nearly every search is different. I don't use a search engine to search for things I've search for before .... because I've found them .... obviously ....
And another thing: email, browser and OS only autocomplete things that I've already searched for, Google is suggesting what to search for, I don't see this as being the same at all.
1) Automatic word completion system for partially entered data [patft.uspto.gov]
A word completion system that can automatically predict unrestricted word completions for data entries in an unstructured portion of a data file. The word completion system applies prediction criteria to avoid annoying the user by displaying an excessive number of wrong suggestions. Suggested word completions, which may change as the user types a partial data entry, are displayed in a non-disruptive manner and selected using traditional acceptance keystrokes, such as the "tab" key or the "enter" key. The word completion system may be deployed on an individual application program basis or on a application-independent basis. Because different word suggestion lists may be appropriate for different application programs, and for different data files created with the same application program, the word completion system allows the user to select one or more suggestion lists for use with each data file. A user interface allows the user to customize each suggestion list on an on-going basis. Each suggestion list may contain dynamic word completions that are tied to dynamic parameters maintained by the computer system, such as the time, date, registered user, and so forth. Each suggestion list may also be tied to contextual information, such as structured data fields or context labels assigned manually or by a document-creation aid known as a "wizard."
2) System and method for facilitating user input by automatically providing dynamically generated completion information [patft.uspto.gov]
The system and method of the present invention automatically provides dynamically generated completion information for facilitating user input of email addresses or contact information. This completion information is developed from a "data store" comprised of multiple data sources such as previously sent or received email, and other types of electronic files such as word processor or spreadsheet files. The present invention monitors and uses the information in the data store to automatically store, track, maintain, and organize data entries in a dynamic "resolution list". As a user begins to input an email address or contact, the present invention can either automatically complete the entry using a most probable result from the resolution list, or can display a list of likely matches from which the user may select the desired email address or contact.

FAQ on Google Suggestion Tool:
"Google Suggest does not base its suggestions on your personal searches, although it does use information about the relative popularity of common searches to rank its suggestions."
BUT I think it is another step towards illiteracy. Not only does LSI force us to use the same boring language that G thinks is relevant to our money terms, now it shows everybody what they are ...
It's great for SEO, but I am not sure I like it as a social and language phenomenon.
LSI is not language specific. This autosuggestion thingy though is for English only, at least for the few German words I typed in, I only got English results. Those cannot possibly be the most common searches ...
So, it is NOT such a great KW tool after all .. at least not across the board!
