is it really worthless?

Yes, it doesn't tell you anything about the true nature of your backlinks, but is it really broken? Does it possibly say something about the links Google values or the links Google bothers to count?

This is a hard subject to search for on WW so if someone can point me to threads or tell me how they know it's broken, much appreciated.

Matt Cuts spoke about it in Vegas. They are now showing more lower PR sites and less higher pr sites with the link command. It's not broken it is designed that way now. There are many things you can do you can go to Yahoo and use their link command. You can also type "+www.domain.+com" with the quotes and you will get a list of sites that contain the the text www.domain.com. A lot of sites link this way so it is a good list. Also check your logs. Combine all that data in a spreadsheet maybe even write a spider that uses that data and makes you a report.
