I am in need of some wise scholarly advice. My site got penalized or pretty much banned by Google on the 11/21 update. I wrote to googlebot at google.com and they replied with a generic message saying something about buying PR links and cloaking. In the past we did this deal with a huge internet media company to get links back to us so now we've cut that deal off. And we've never done any cloaking. How should I go about getting my site back into the Google index? What is the timeframe one should expect? One idea we were thinking of is contacting top-notch SEO firms to see if they have any contacts at Google to get relisted faster? Anyone have experience with getting a site relisted? Thanks.

is yoru site indexed at all? Do you get visits from Googlebot? if so, you're not banned and Google can't help you. It's all automatic. If you are banned (not on the index), you can clean up and email them for reinclusion

The short answer is send an email to webmaster @ google.com with the subject line reinclusion request.
For more info search google for reinclusion request. I found the answers.google.com thread to be informative as well.

I have a site that was penalized (graybar) by Google. Confirmed via email. Submitted the reinclusion request.Been a few months. Googlebot still visits very consistently, though. Is that reason for hope?

Yeah, my site is still getting visits from Googlebot. However, GoogleBot isn't visiting my homepage.

Says it has 1040 results. Lots of them are in the Supplemental Result section. And the home page listing is buried deep and doesn't have a title or description.

Says it has 1040 results

Then it's not banned. Sites/domains that are truly banned don't have any pages in the index.

All I can tell you is to clean up the site as best you can and remove whatever you think got the site penalized. It may recover in a few months, perhaps sooner.

If you need faster results you may need to start over from scratch, with a new domain.

Any dupe content on your site? Home page have text pulled from someone else's website? That could cause the loss of a page title, description, and ranking.

My site went from 1 to 212 and I think dupe content is the problem.

Number 7 is a site that has a history of widgets taken from my site with permission (and with link to me as source).

How does Google know who is the originator? Because dupe content seems to be everywhere thanks to spam directories let alone genuine usage.

We don't have any dupe content but recently someone made a carbon copy of our site. We had to use the DMCA to get the site removed but the site was up for 11 days.

Also, regarding the site:www.domain.com test, just because a site shows up for that query, I don't believe that means the site isn't penalized. I have many sites that haven't show up in google results for 1+ year and they have pages that show up for site:www.domain.com.

penalized is different from banned. if you're penalized wirttign to Google will not help. Fix (if you can) whatever they see as a problem and it will be back they say

How can you tell if a new site is banned or just waiting to rank?

If I write to google, will they tell me if my site is penalized or not?

I'm thinking that I'm just in the silica square, but I did have some alt text on images that have been removed for months now (Once I realized I might get penalized for it).

Nothing horrible, just the website description over a three unrelated gifs.
