image map links

can a search engine spider follow links that are part of an image map like this:

<area shape="rect" coords="3,130,53,150" href="index.php" alt="Home">

Any disadvantages?

I have seen a backlink from an image map so it would seem that they can.

Can't imagine why there would be a disadvantage but you might want to consider changing your ALT tag from home to a KeyWord that describes "home"...
