On the web host that I'm with, in common with the way that a lot of web hosts do it, I share the same IP address with other websites. The question is, do Google and/or the other SE's penalise by IP address's? Sev.

Not as a rule. But perhaps if they find that there is a huge nest of scamy spammy stuff on the one IP and very little else they may think it more effective to just ban the whole ip.

Even that's not so easy. Avoid having interconnected simmilar site on the same I.P's and you've nothing to fear.

I have a couple of similar sites (ie some pages may be optimized for similar keywords) on the same hosts. The sites are not linked at all but the whois info would appear to be same. Could this cause problems even though they are not linked?

With the cost of hosting so cheap, it would it be very easy to find a host that gives you your own IP.
Many can be found for less than 100 bucks a year.
Why even take the risk?

i already have 2 sites on this domain so would it likely cause any problems as it is though?

Stickyboy,it could if the sites have similar backlinks. If their backlinks are fairly similar, then you might find one of your sites not scoring in the serps. No Ban,just surpressed.

if i moved one of the sites to a different hosting company would it solve the problem or would google tag the two sites whatever now?

Could work but unless you can add some differring link sources I doubt it.Getting different independent links to your sites should be your main priority. Then it doesn't matter who owns it or hosts it.
