Why does google display some indexed urls wrong?

Why do some sites appear as:

www.domain.com/whatever/whatever.html and some as
www.domain.com/whatever/ whatever.html

What the space? I can't seem to figure that out...

Any comments appreciated.

I've seen that, but the links always seem to work.
Could it be they try to disturb some of the scraper sites' bots?

I have been very curious about this as well. Most of our links have a space in them and it just started in the last couple months.

You mean the space in the green text? That isn't a link. It is just text.

The gap is to force a line break on long URLs so that the result isn't forced down the page to appear under the last of the right-hand adverts.

Sometimes, very rarely, you will see a VERY big gap after the first or second result with the next result a very long way down the page, and placed directly after the adverts. That occurs on a very very long URL, because Google does not put in any other breaks on a very very long URL, they only have the one break.
