In which country are you located?

In which country is your site hosted?

Any specific word search terms?

I have a similar problem with not one - but 4 sites of mine. These sites, in English and aimed at a global audience rank very well on regional language searches (#1 to #10), but are buried deep into #700-800 on google.com. The sites are about two months old (sandboxed?), and I believe there is some sort of a filter in place.

The sites do well in most regional languages like Finnish, Hindi, Gaeilge, Arabic etc, except for main languages like English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Also, could someone let me know on how does one detect where my server is located geographically?

sahuman run your url though netcraft and then look at who the "netblock owner" is. Not authoritive but normally this is where your site is hosted.

I experience this phenomenon related to a new (sandboxed) site I am developing. About 1/2 of the pitance of traffice I get from Google.com comes from Google Canada and various European Googles. I was curious as to why also.

I'm hosted in Colorado. I'm in the USA.

As an aside, I read once that a company/site name meant an extremely dodgy sexual practice in a foreign language....they too were baffled by their apparent success in branding but no sales :-o

The_Monkey, how do your rankings compare between G.com and the European versions?

One of my sites has a domainame that is both a common English and French word. As a result I get some traffic from France. What puzzles me is that the word in French is not related to the web site's business and it is in English but the French people still click into my site?

I don't think this has anything to do with content targetted for specific regions. My sites do well on almost every language - persian, uzbek, hindi, vietnamese, hungarian and a load of languages I have never knew that existed. Except the sites are buried deep in major international languages searches like English, French, Italian, German.

You can view the list of Google language pages at:
[google.com...]

One of my sites, created just 4 days ago, is already in the top 10 of these foreign language pages, but not in Google.com.

Could others check if there sites penalized in anyway - either sandboxed or for duplicate content shows up in these languages with a better ranking?

I felt that my site experienced this phenomenon also. Why would this be?

My site has been around since May '04, not very long. I get either the 10th though 60th...nothing fancy. And its a shame my total G traffic has been dropping the past 2 weeks...from around 150 uniques per day to around 50 now...eww.
