Well how about this: for one of our key phrases on the first page of SERPs there are 2 sites linking to us (one reciprocal and one somebody I don't know). One's PR0, one's PR2. Both of them have one outbound link: us. And where do we rank? Position 18
It's like a PENALTY for getting links, organic or not.
Search for our company name? Page 2 or 3, right after all the obscure blog entries of the world discussing our company and product.
