This way Google can gently dial in their algo tweak so that folks will be forced to up their Adwords spending...and their won't be the sudden changes like last year...
watch for it..
I'm concerned about a repeat of the "Florida massacre". To that end, I've expanded our visibility beyond Google, as well as within Google (more keywords, better titles, new pages).
Been saving a few pennies on Adwords too, moving my costs down while keeping the ads up. I expect the costs may have to go up some for the holidays, since everyone else will most likely be jockeying for better visibility too.
Adwords is their business, basically their only significant business.
As a pubic company, Google now exists solely to maximize shareholder profits. Anyone telling you otherwise has been brainwashed by their own MBA ethics course.
To the extent that providing lower quality search results generates more profits than high quality results, taking into account both short-term and long-term financial impacts, it is Google's responsibility to do so.
Therefore, tweaking their results for the holidays is a legitimate and smart strategy.
And how much money does Google make if I search using Google, and click on the SERPs rather than the Adwords? NONE. From a business perspective, Adword buyers are the customers, and searchers are the *product* being sold. Of course, if the quality of Google's SERPs gets so bad that the searchers go elsewhere, they are gonna lose Adword revenue.
This would suggest that Google should put the priority on having good SERPs when the query is informational, and the person is not looking to buy, and having mediocre SERPs but highly relevant Adwords when a searcher is looking to buy something. Simple economics.

As far as I can see, very few public companies look very far into the future nowadays.
The next quarters results being the only thing that really matters.
With this in mind, I would expect Google to grab as much cash as possible while it can.
Google will not be king of the hill forever.
I believe the whole speculation about what to do now for Christmas is going to be difficult if there is a Florida like update in between (maybe a "Vegas Update"?)
but we should start now anyway...
cheers
