My page got listed in Google lately. The problem is that it has great listings for not quite competitive keywords (can call those even weird)and for truly competitive ones, it has a listing around 30.
I`ve understood that inbound links really do make a difference, so my first step would be searching for new quality links.
What else could I do? I have to admit that the page has no meta tag, we haven`t done any optimization etc. Would it help to use meta tags etc? How could I improve my listings for more competitive keywords?
Thanks for all the help!

You understood right.

Make sure that those inbound links have the keywords you're targetting in various forms in their anchor text, e.g
<a href=*yourdomain*>Widgets</a>
<a href=*yourdomain*>Blue Wdigets</a>
<a href=*yourdomain*>Lots of widgets</a>
You can have lots of one keyword in particular, but keep it balanced.
Target deep links direct to your core content where you can.
If that needs further explanation, let us know...

Start here:-

... and amend your pages accordingly. That'll give you a good start.
Then wait. Review in 2-3 months time. Over that time, keep getting those inbound anchor text links and keep adding new content.

In a nutshell, lots of effort on the above.
