I work for a company that manages a number of URLs, all of which have a page rank of 5. On each URL, we list (and link to) a number of client sites. Also, we typically have a few inter-links between our own sites -- no more than 3 or 4 -- when content is related.
The problem is that when I go to check the backward links (in Google) -- both on our own sites and on our clients sites -- our own URLs never show up. I check the backward links on the sites that we link to, and our site is nowhere to be found. Similarly, I check our own sites to look for the inter-link backlinks, and there too -- our sites don't show up.
As I mentioned, all of our sites have a PR of 5. Now, I had been under the impression that Google basically ignores backlinks from low PR sites... I believe in the range of PR3 and below. But I've never heard of Google ignoring PR5 sites. Has anybody else?
So, I guess I'm pretty mystified as to why this is occurring. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks for the reply -- and let me say that I absolutely agree with you. I think, though, that I should clarify my message here:
My problem doesn't so much have to do with whether or not PR gets passed on from low-PR sites (I, too, believe that it can and does). Rather, I am simply wondering about how Google chooses the backward links that it reports in the backward link checker of the Google toolbar. I have a *few* PR-5 sites that are cross-linked, but don't show up in eachothers' backward link checks. This concerns me, as I then question whether or not they are passing on any PR...
I only brought up the issue of PR value because I thought a PR-5 site would surely be worthy of reporting as a backlink, in Google's eyes (whereas a low-PR site might not show up when checking backward links). It just makes me wonder why a medium/high-PR site like mine wouldn't show up as a backward link.
Anyhow, I hope that this is all clear -- and again, would greatly appreciate any and all advice on the matter.
Thus, at the moment I'd say just ignore the Google link: command.
So, if the links are from PR pages, they should show up in the toolbar backlink. That said, the toolbar backlinks do not always show, some PR5's won't show and some PR3,2.1's will show occasionally. If you really want to check backlinks, use yahoo.
If you are wondering about PR passing, remove the interlinks for 60 days, don't add/remove anything else
and see if your rank changes. If your serp results change and nothing else has changed, you know the links were of benefit and put them back.
Thanks for the insight. I certainly hope that you're right -- that the reason for these omissions is on Google's end and not mine.
AmericanBulldog,
>Just to be real clear, PR5 site is not the same to me as a PR5 page.
Agreed. I need to be more careful with my wording. I meant "page" the whole time, but wrote "site" instead. My fault.
And that sounds like a good idea about removing some of the links for a while & seeing what happens. Might give it a try. Good idea.
