Google shows my URL differently

.... why me?

On the Google results pages my listings are shown fine but the URL (the one in green) is shown differently to my competitors:

[example.com...] folder/file.html

Whereas my competitors are shown as:

[example.com...]

This is the case for files on my dynamic site aswell:

[example.com...] folder/file.php?product=1234

Whereas competitors get the normal:

[example.com...]

My rankings are good and I'm above many of the sites that have a normal URL listing so I figure I haven't been penalised in any way. The pages aren't new, they've been on Google for about 4-5 months so I am at a loss to explain it.

Is your domain longer than the other site's domain? Google insert the space when the URL might cause problems to users of narrow-width screens.

hi ciml,

is there any other reason why Google might add that space? Is the clustered result more likely to have a space becuase it is indented?

As far as I know, the space is only added to stop horizontal scrolling (you may have noticed WebmasterWorld threads with URLs adjusted for 'scrollism').

I don't know if indented listings have the space more often, but I have noticed that the URL-length for adding the space doesn't seem fixed.

The added space in a domain is purely for formatting purposes so that all those poor people who think it's "kewl" to surf the web on a cellphone with a 1-inch screen won't risk any sideways scrolling. It has absolutely no influence on the result itself.

Do I sound cynical there? ;)

ciml's explanation seems to work for me. I'll leave it there then, as long as it's not some 'Sandbox', penalty, dynamic issues etc.

Thanks
