I'm fairly new to all this, but I do know that link popularity is very important for PageRank. If I have a site with PR 6, and am starting a link exchange from scratch, how can I increase the PR of the links page so that it will not be turned down for links? Will interlinking all of my pages increase the overall PR of the site?

you can interlink, but to get pagerank to shine on you, you need the link from a page that already has pagerank. so if the whole site is new and therefore has no pagerank, you need to go outside your own little world to get it, either by convincing someone to put a link to you or by paying them.

When I started out I went to every free directory I could find and submitted my website. The big free directory is still DMOZ. I also did the guestbook spam and forum spam thing. I know everybody hated it, but it was the only way I could get ahead with no money and no connections.

If you have money or know people that could link to you, I assume you wouldn't be asking here.

Also, check out this link for some good reading:

Just Dave,

Link building is the key. Not only for achieving a good PR but also to stay in the top of the SERPS. Lately google has been very catious about where your links are coming from and whom are you linking. Try to get as much information as you can before you eventually start accumlating or exchanging links.A few bad neighbourhood linking may lead to the penalization of the site. The purpose is not to scare you but to make you realize that Link building is indeed the most important part of an SEO endevour for Google. Check out the forum for more details..

No, you cannot increase the overall pagerank by interlinking all of your own internal pages (Although you can focus PR on certain pages of your site in the way you structure the internal links).

The way to increase your PR is to acquire incoming links from as many and varied sources as possible. PR6 is pretty respectable to begin with so I wouldn't go desperately exchanging links with every half-baked links site etc. Look for good quality relevant sites in your subject area and send a few friendly emails.
