600k too big for a site directory page...?

losing out on G but #1 AND #2 in MSN & Yahoo! SERPS

Our site has a 'table of contents' page, linked from index.html, which has a link to each product page, along with image and short description. It's about 650k in size. Both Yahoo! and MSN lap it up and for most product keywords I can get both #1 AND #2 in SERPS at same time e.g. index.html at #1 and the site index at #2. SO Yahoo & MSN dont seem to have a problem with a page so large.

However Google doesn't seem to like large pages at all, it caches 101k and stops. Should I reduce the size of the site index (i.e. lose images and product descriptions just leave internal links) to get it below 100k? Would this boost my SERPS on G (may lose out on Yahoo! & MSN though).

I think it is pretty well accepted that 100K is the max size (html and code, not including images) for G. I've seen this in posts (by members more knowledgeable than myself) many times. Additionally, given that not everyone has a high-speed connection yet, 650K is just too damn big and takes too long to load.

My suggestion would be to break the page in question into thirty or more pages. If you can divy it up into smaller chunks, it will be easier for G to digest and may be easier for visitors to navigate.

I'm assuming in saying this that the 650K refers to the pages code and does not includes the images, but either way, from a design standpoint, the page is just overly large.

Is it still a good idea to keep pages down to 100 links. I have been doing this but it sure is limited. I can only have 100 pages that are linked to from the home page and 10K below that. I have seen sites with tons more links per page and the pages are ranking well.
