After offering niche goods on-line for almost 2 years we are planning to expand and launch a more general site which would sell new products but include also our old niche goods X&Y.
Is it better to (1) link from the brand new general domain to our old and strong X&Y web site or (2) create subpages on the new domain which would have unique static content for X&Y and exist as an alternative to our old X&Y site?
We only have one popular website now and are afraid to risk banning of the old site when launching the new general site. The old X&Y site is a dynamic database and so will be the new site.

I would always exercise extreme caution when developing two sites in the same marketplace. (we did it and got stung)
To be totally safe I would:
a) host your new site on a totally seperate IP
b) do not have any hyperlinks between them (or one as a maximum)
c) be very careful not to duplicate content
d) build links from other sites
Is there any way you could integrate the new content on to the old site as this is the one that's actually getting some traffic.

I have also bad experience with making new sites.
In this case, it is impossible to integrate the new content on the old site, because the old site has a very specific name.
To sum up the solutions:
1 - do the new site and not include the old products
2 - do the new site and include the old products in a completely different way (unique content)
3 - do the new site and for the new products link to the old page.
I have difficulties predict what Google finds acceptable and what not. Logically it seems natural, that businesses should have space to develop freely, but here it may be a lottery. Option 3 is the easiest technically.
Does anybody else have any experience with this?
