So how did we get this lucky with PR0 and no backlinks. No H1 tags and no cheating, this is for a very competitive keyphrase. It has normally been on page 2 or 3 and just shot up to the 3rd result. Any ideas?

That happens with new sites where they climb to the top of the SERPs for a few days. They're later withdrawn after 2-3 days and retreat back to the place they deserve. yet another favour is being given by google to the sites which have forums or are news sites. The web pages with the recent reuslt on the related keywords shot up in the SERPS and stay there for a while to be replaced by other later. This is the result of the algorithmic changes after florida update to bring a homogenuity to the SERP resuts. There can be more factors too.

hmm, the thing is, this page is a couple years oldgets product updates, usually just a change in a product # in the code.

If your website used to be on Page 2 or 3 with 0PR and no backlinks, nor any on-page optimization then the keyword is not that competetive. Try it with quotes and see how many people are competing for it. Try with "allintitle" also.

Why are you using a page with no backlinks? Do you mean the link: command shows zero backlinks? If you have a single internal link from a PR5 page, that would normally achieve at least a PR3 for the target page.

oh, it has had a link from the index page for quite sometime that is PR6, just no inbound from anywhere other than the site. Its been hanging tough for a week now with no flux.

Oh! I thought that it is your main page you are talking about. If ti is a subpage and your main page is a PR6 with enough backlinks, then if you have a subpage more relevant to the subject being searched than your index page, the subpage will rank. However this is usually not true, with an index page without any links or PR.
