Our site is a well respected and settled name in our industry. Very stable PR6, aprox. 2000 incomming links. We are also highly well ranked on super competitive terms but..... unlike most other sites on the first result page ours is jumping between the spots like mad. One day weīre #5 first page, the next day weīre #10, the next day #2 second page and then #6 on the first page again. This goes on for months now ..well ...almost a year actually. The number of backlinks nevers changed that fast and neither did our PR.

I saw that many cheating sites (that sooner or later vanished) stayed on a single spot and hardly moved for months. So to me it looks like the jumping around is a very natural thing while keeping the same spot month after month makes the site look a little bit suspicious. Can that be right? or is it the other way round? Is there something wrong with my site?

Sounds like you are adding content to your site on a regular basis?

The same here mito, our site is jumping too, we are adding new pages about once a week too.

A question Brett please:

We have over 3,000 pages in google one day then 2,500 the next day, then 3,400 - what is happening? why is google dropping the pages?
