404 error for mapped directories like /directory/index.php

Google is trying to find if these directories are real?

I saw in access log that are so many 404 errors for pages like:
/directory/index.php
/directoryA/directoryB/index.php etc...

So, these directories are created by mod_rewrite, they don't exist really. I'm thinking: "Google (or other search engine) is trying to find if these directories are real trying to access some files (index.php in this case) into these directories?"

*** I don't know if these hits are made by Google...

Someone has the same question in mind?!

? Do you have the access log or not?

404 on directories sounds more like slurp.

Sorry, access log => web statistic system (Awstats in this case), not the access log from webserver.
