IMO the problem is due to varius kind of penalties: dup content, spam pages, manual penalty...
What's happening to you might just be one of those nobody-knows-why fluctuations. Keep about your normal work and wait a few weeks before you try anything drastic.
We are clean, static, high PR website that is more than 3 years old. Also, the same thing happened last May, we made no changes and everything came back over the course of 4-6 weeks.
Don't be too quick to panic.
I've seen this happen too many times with Google to raise any panic flags. You may end up with a slow Google month so go out and find a great link that will compensate for the traffic. That's what I did when I had an odd Google month and that link has more than compensated, even when Google popped back in the following month.
This isn't a reflection on you but, people freak out way to quickly when Google has it's moment. Most, not all of us, deal with it at one time or another. There are just too many 'things' it could be to even determine sometimes what it is and then when you blink, it all changes again.
Google is so unpredictable, we too have nearly 4,000 product pages in google for one of our sites, but we do NOT rely on google because of its inconsistency with se results.
Anyone that has been in the game for over 5 years has seen that no search engine can be relied upon especially for free listings.
We all used to optimise for alta vista and excite with incredible results and now these engines are almost non important anymore.
I think google will be here forever to offer free listings, but all good webmasters worth their salt know that a good even round of traffic can be gained from other search engines.
If you have an ecommerce business or businesses you will be better off thinking of google as the cream on the top of your all important visitors.

Good advice, IMO!
Don't base your decisions on what Google is doing, rather make sure YOUR site is running properly. Google will not be OWNING search forever and the best thing(IMO again) to do is play the field now.
IE:
If you are dropping in ALL the engines, then take a hard look at your site.
If you are only losing ground in Google, concentrate on making your site better.
I see sites(mine!) take lumps every now and then, only to come back just as strong as ever.
Do check your site out thoroughly for any problems:
- Check that proper headers [webmasterworld.com] are being returned
- If the site uses cookies, check that session ids are not causing troubles(eg. turn your cookies off and look for sid in URLs)
- Look at your external linking(ie. they MUST be somehow picking up on sites that recip-link heavily and rapidly)
- As mentioned earlier, MAKE SURE you aren't creating dynamic pages that could be misconstrued as duplicate content.(eg. using mod_rewrite to make friendly URLs, but still having scattered dynamic links that will essentially form the exact same document)

That's why you failed...No doubt.
Back to basics - You need a "very cool head" at the time of adversities in SE rankings. Not until the storm has calmed down then you should peep out of the window.
If your site is built correctly has good internal and external linking, and you are doing nothing wrong to upset google, you will be fine in the long run.
