Main page or Money pages?

My site has 3 separate divisions that really have nothing to do with one another. Under my main page I have about 4 – 5 pages (that have many pages under them) that are linked to by my main page. Of these 4 – 5 only 1 is the “money page” (catalog for 1 division and description of our service on the other 2) the others are like fluff (contact us, about us, ..). Currently I have a link back to my main page on every page on the site, and most of my backlinks link to my main page (I am now tiring to change this) instead of my “money pages”.

My question is, would I be better off not linking back to my main page once the user is in the divisional pages. Would I be better off PR wise to focus on the money page for each division instead of pushing all that pr back up to the main page? Should I also only show the 3 links to the money page on the main page and let the user move to the fluff pages once they have reached the main page?

Any suggestions would help.

If I understand you right I assume by 'main page' you mean home or index page, and that your money pages are beneath your 4-5 top pages.

If this is correct, my suggestion would be to keep all your pages backlinking to your main page which will increase the PR of your home page and decrease the PR of your less important pages. Otherwise the less important pages which just gather PR. Also if a user cannot see a 'home' link they may just leave the site. It's standard practice and what a user expects to see.

Retain your links on your main page to the 4-5 top pages for your site areas, making them prominent which makes the structure of the site clear to users. Then to increase the PR of the money pages, put less prominent links to them also on your main page. If necessary call them 'direct links' or 'quick links' or something. The users will not be confused, but a search engine will treat each link equally and give your money pages the same PR as your 4-5 top pages.

To reduce the number of 'fluff' pages consider linking from your main page to just one of them with an index on it to the others. You can make it clear in the text near the link what pages the link leads to.

Actual the structure is Like this

Main page: Links to pages 1,2,3.

Page 1 links to 1a (the "money page" for this division), 1b,1c,..(1c many link to some 1c1 and 1c2s... and so on)

Pages 2 and 3 are set up similar to page 1 but geared to a different manufacturing sector.

My goal is to pump up the #a pages “money pages”. Right now all pages on the site link to the main but I am wondering if <b>only</b> the 1,2 and 3 should link to the main and have all the #a ,#b and #c sections link back to their parent 1,2 and 3 pages and not the main.

The Main page is just for namesake as many people search for us by name for all three divisions but I really don’t want the users on the main page per say.

I would still suggest the best way to increase the PR of your money pages 1a, 2a, and 3a, is to have links to them from your main page. This would ensure that these pages have at least the same PR as your pages 1, 2, and 3. If they come under 1, 2, and 3, their PR will always be less whatever else you do.

Thank you for your imput, but I made a mistake the 1 , 2 and 3 pages are my money pages (I was thinking too deep). let me try again with this chart:

Main page
-Widgets page (money page for this division)
---blue widgets
---red widgets
---black widgets
------black small widgets
------black large widgets
-Wingdings page (money page for this division)
---yellow wingdings
------round yellow wingdings
---orange wingdings
-Wingets page (money page for this division)
---..
---..
------..
---.. and so on

What I am looking for is to make the money pages rank better. Right now the main pages is a PR5 and the money pages a PR4. Should I remove the main page links on the sub-sub pages and just hve them point to the money pages for each section?

I really don't know the answer to that.

I did try something similar, but it appeared to reduce the PR of the home page and therefore Google did not visit so often. I couldn't be sure of this, but I put back the links to the home page just in case.

this sounds like a decent idea.

also check your main page and see if there are any links that are not needed to strenghten the PR transfer to your money pages.

If the other main page links are needed for the user but does not need pr then look into javascript linking to those pages. To javascript link without the pr transferring you now need to break the link...
e.g. "http://"+"www.your" + "domain.com"

make sense?
