By now the better wikis will either be secured (or at least excluding the wiki from crawlers) or worthless because of "bad neighbourhood" stuff.

Properly using wiki to gain backlinks is all right. But using wiki just to gain backlinks is a spam. I will not spam wiki anymore.
Chinese seem to have bad famous of spamming wiki. But most of them even don't know what is wiki. They cannot understand the English on wiki sites. But they know what "Edit this page" means. They just use link:www.othersite.com to find those strange wiki pages. They find out that those pages have high pr and there are many links on them. After adding their own URL they are still wondering why those pages can be edited.
By using CURL of PHP I can spam wiki at easy. But it is wrong. So I stop doing it.
By contrast, my links make perfect sense there--they add value to the page--and are therefore kept. Indeed, I didn't add most of them myself.
