How wide is the inanchor: net?

From time to time I search for my company name. It's a made up word so it's a good measure of, well, errrrr , something.

Anyway, On the first page was a site that I think is useful and so I link to it from my homepage. Blimey, I think to myself - they've linked back to me. So I take a look and well, no they haven't. My company name does not appear on the page nor is there a link back to my site. So the only way it could appear in a search for my company name would be as a result of the link on my home page.

So I go back to my home page, and the answer is obvious. The link in question is the last on the page and a couple of lines below is my company name.

THE CONCLUSIONS
Well, from a single example, definite conclusions should not be drawn, but it would certainly appear that
a) In general searches, page text near backlinks is counted, not just anchor text.
b) inanchor: searches return results in which neighboring page text appears.

I have believed this likely for over a year - at last I have a grain of evidence.

So far I haven't seen a hint for such a behaviour. I have numerous unique words near a link. Hovewer, a search for one of these words just brings up the page with the word and not the target page.

what does the cached page in the search results for this site show? Does it say that the words only appear in links pointing to this page?

Just checked - YES.

Of course, Google being Google, it's not possible to check that no one else has linked to the site using my company name, but it seems very unlikely. As I said, my company name is not an English word, nor Dutch or anything else as far as I know. Also, my company name is unrelated to my website domain name.

It counts, imho. Not in the same way as anchor text, but I believe it can help a site being linked to. I've just seen an instance where I believe that's what's responsible for giving a very helpful boost to a site of mine.

kaled,

have you checked the source code and the URL. 'These terms only appear in links pointing to this page' also appears if the words are only in the title, alt tag (image link), the url ...

Just double-checked the source code of the page for both my company name and website name - NOTHING.

Also, just Googled ~CompanyName -CompanyName, yes you guessed it - NOTHING. So that's stemming ruled out too.

Just shows how anchor text placed within a paragraph of good relevant words is far more effective than a link isolated on the page.

Do you think this helps internal linking as well?
