I set it up and had the links established, I got two DMOZ listings for two funny pages on my site, I got all these links, but I saw no change in PageRank in two months. Every page remained at PR0.
I assumed that I must have been banned, and concluded that the previous owner of the domain must have tainted it with Google. I sent an email to them enquiring about a possible ban, they said that there was no ban because pages were appearing.
Anyway, a few days later I check and... PR4 on every main page.
I don't know if Google lifted a penalty I shouldn't of got, if there was a bug with my listing or if the spiders just took upwards of a month to update my PR from the links. Either way I'm a bit happier now. :)
It's wierd, with this site there is NO reason to want PR, or traffic. I suppose I just want to be read, but I don't expect many readers to my site to turn up randomly. I guess, well, collecting PR is addictive, and it's like a hobby. It gives you a sense of achievement (doing it the honest way).
Also my friend was happy because I had a link to his page and it sent him strait up to PR4 as well, instantly giving him the number 1 result in Google for his name.
bluelightning2k,
First of all, welcome to Webmasterworld and congratulation that your site gains its PR.
No, I don't think your domain has been banned before. For new sites, it can take one or two Google updates after gaining some good links before there will be any PR assinged to the site. This could take upto 6-8 weeks (one update cycle takes around 3-4 weeks), so your situation is normal (BTW, there seems to be some G glitch recently that new sites and new pages that were online around the end of April would not have their PR until 23 June 04).
Lastly, I think you should spend a few minutes to drop an e-mail to the previous owner of the domain and say sorry for your misunderstanding.
Because bluelightning2k said "I assumed that I must have been banned, and concluded that the previous owner of the domain must have tainted it with Google. I sent an email to them enquiring about a possible ban, they said that there was no ban because pages were appearing."
If I were to be that owner, I would be pretty upset. Just a suggestion of courtesy note.
