How strict is the 100 links per page concept?

I have read several places that googlebot will only index about 100 links per page. 1)Is this true? 2)Is it exactly 100 links?

I have a site map and was wondering if I would have to break it up.

The 100 links on a page is rather recommendation but a good rule to follow. My old site map has more than 500 links and actively gets referrals. During the Toronto SES conference, G recommended to limit links to 100 per page.

Since fear factor is strong, I broke my new maps into pages with up to 99 links :)

The big limit is really the 100k per page size.

Google will crawl more than 100 links on a page, but wether PR passes in the same way is up to debate.

Given most people on the Internet are still on dial-up, only a fool of a commercial webmaster would want pages larger than that. (Unless perhaps the site was specifically targeting high speed users, such as online gaming.) And remember, that 101k is just the HTML source. If there are images on the page, that doesn't count for the 101k limit.

What everyone else said. The limit to be more aware of is the 101K limit on pages. 100 links is just a guideline that helps encourage to keep pages < 101K. You can put 150 or 200 links on a page with no problem, but keep in mind what an earlier poster mentioned: if you have several hundred links on a page, you might want to take a step back and think if that's the best thing for users. There could be a way to rework the links so that they make more sense for both users and search engines (e.g. break down links chronologically, into alphabetical chunks, by topic, etc.).

Three of my links come from such pages and PR transfer seems to be ok. One of these links pages is a PR7 with over 500 links and growing, and this has been quite helpful to all the sites it is linking.
