I know of a company that has practically all product URLs in .com .net .org and so forth.
like : bluewidget.com redwidget.net yellowwidget.org and so forth.
All are pointed to the mainsite.
For ranking this is no benefit however some people looking for bluewidgets just punch it in in their location bar and by default MSIE will try to find that URL with a .com extension. But to be honest he gets almost zero traffic out of it.
Another reason he registered all those domains (about 5000 of them). Is for other people that might register them. (this are very very common words in that industry).
All is linked with permanent redirects. It is not hurting them but the benefits are almost worthless.
Our site actually sits on a domain like www.wdgt.co.uk but we advertise www.company-name.com. This has caused google to attribute back links to www.company-name.com (but no page rank) whereas www.wdgt.co.uk is in the google directory with a page rank of 4. I think they should ditch www.company-name.com altogether and go for the shorter (easier to remember) domain. All the email addresses however are person@company-name.com, and they don't want to change them, so it is all a bit of a mess.
What are other people's experience of this kind of thing?
