Do any of you how often Pagerank update? Will it update once it find a new link on a different site?

Also, how much will one PR8 link do to one PR4 site? Will it help much to have for example 3 PR7 links in addition to the PR8 link?

Please help me understand this :)

The more links the better for PageRank. As long as they're from a reputable site with the page you're listed on being PR4 or better. Obvoiusly PR8 is better than PR4.

Yes, there seems to be a PR update in progress. If you check with google datacenter 66.102.9.104 it shows new results.

PR gets updated daily. However the PR shown in the toolbar is updated once a month or so.

It seems there are a couple of critical values in PR.

PR8+ : I am still investigating on this but what I see is multiple visits a day on the same URL's and rest similar as PR5+

PR5+ : get daily visits on every page that is PR5 or higher and a deepcrawl about once a week.

PR4 : gets a daily visit on the index page.

PR1+ : gets only a monthly visit.

I think the toolbar PR will be updated next week however today or tomorrow is as well possible. On the other hand maybe we have to wait 3 more weeks.

mattheusmorgan:

Your question can not be answered so easily. "One PR8 link" to a PR4 site can do wonders! If it were the only link on that PR8 site's page!

If on the other hand there are 250 links on that PR8 page and you are the last one of those links, then you probably get nothing out of it.

Same story for the PR7 links - it depends how many competing links there are on that particular page.

every link is worth something.

However see it as money. If you compare a PR8 link as 100 USD and you have to share with 100 others. You will get 1 USD.

If a PR7 page is worth 10 USD and there is only 1 link on that page you will get 10 USD.

However PR is not the most important. The most important is to have a good anchor text. That is what really give you good ranking for your keywords.

Someone correct me if what I'm about to say is wrong. I read about a year ago in an article, but I’m not sure from where. The article said that a rule of thumb to tell the difference between each PR is a difference of about 7 times.

For example a page that has a PR of 2 is worth about 7 times that of a PR 1. That these figures can roughly be looked at as a deferential equation, where each PR is about 7 times higher then the previous number. I’m not sure if this is true, but if you look at some of the differences between websites, this equation could be close at times.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I don't think this is a differential equation, rather a log scale with a base 7 is what you are referring to. Although I am not sure what the base is, this seems to hold true that it is based on a scale like that. Therefore, if the base were 7, what you say is correct in that a pagerank of 2 is 7 times more valued than a pagerank of 1, assuming they value pagerank like that.

PR in toolbar is only from 0 to 10. This is not exact PR.

It is possible to have a PR 6.000001 and a PR 6.999999

They both will show PR 6 in the toolbar

Yes, 0-10 ranking is clear. Which basically means they set an upper limit and when they scale your page with log system, they probably compare it to all the other pages with some sort of scaling. That would not change how the log system would work.

well what I tried to say is that not every PR 6 link is the same since the values are all different. Therefore you cannot tell that the value is x times more than a PR 5 link.

If you have 2 links.

1 : PR 5.99999999
2 : PR 6.00000001

As you can see the PR is almost the same but the PR in toolbar will be different. As well it matters how many links there are on a page to see the estimated gain you will get by getting a link from that page.

Therefore a link from a PR 4 with 5 links can be more valuable than a PR 8 with 1000 links.

however enough said about PR. I think most important is to focus on anchor text.
