One of my sites went from a PR6 to 7 is this last update.

However i have not seen an immediate increase in SERP postions.

So how does Google judge PR in regard SERP's - is there a definite line - i.e. are you either a 6 or 7 and your results will show on jump on change or can you be a very high 6 and move to a low 7 with little impact on your SERP's and the jump is just abitruary number change.

Remember that Toolbar PR is a single digit value of the real Pagerank which in your case e.g. could have been 6.95325 and e.g. jumped to 7.05789. In reality that could have been a negligable rise in Pagerank for that specific page which in itself is only a small part of the all variables that make up your search rank position for a search query.

Also it is not quite clear when Pagerank and backlink updates are calculated into the Serps by Google and when they are shown to us (webmasters).

It could be that the Google spider sees a new link to your webpage and estimates a newer (search)ranking for that page more or less immediately (on-the-fly).

In a later stage Google might do the real ranking and Pageranking calculations and iterations and then rerank your page in the Serps to another non-estimated more correct level.

Meanwhile you might have had two SERP changes due to that extra link and no change in shown backlinks or Pagerank. Google could decide to show that weeks later...leading to us impatient webmasters hoping for better immediate search ranking results....when actually we've already had the boost.

I’m really happy with the Google update. My site went from PR3 to 5 and many of my internal pages received rank. The site has only been open for a little over a month and Google has made over 94,000 hits on it. It’s not much for looks yet but it’s definitely search engine friendly; one of my biggest concerns.

There's also a lot of other factors that Google takes into acount for your SERPs. PR is just a piece of the puzzle. A PR change alone isn't likely to move you up mch at all. I've found much greater rewards in working with other factors than PR hunting. But that's just my experience, your mileage may vary :)

Unfortunately with a directory your rated on what your PR is and the PR on your internal pages with advertisers and submitters. Google has turned the whole industry inside out; I personally strongly dislike the whole PR system and the importance it has taken on in the minds of so many.

Last year, one of our sites lost its PR from 7 to 6. While on a 6 PR, it jumped up in the SERPS from #3 to #1 for the most important keyword of our industry. It has held its #1 position since then. The site only got back its PR 7 during the april PR update.

From our experience, we saw that a boost/drop in PR will not result in a corresponding rise/fall in the SERPs. There are certainly other factors that lead to an increase/decrease in the SERPS ranking.

One thing that it has helped with is giving internal pages a PR of 6 and they have moved up in the SERP's.

This i guess is also parlty due to the fact they are receiving a higher PR link with the keyword in the anchor text.
