redirect www.domain.com/index.php to www.domain.com/

Is this advisable? Can it be done safely?

There was some helpful comments on this in an earlier thread but nothing that applied to my specific case.

Until the last PR update I had domain.com/ at PR0, www.domain.com/ at PR3, and www.domain.com/index.php at PR5. Google showed all my PR4+ pages as backlinks to /index.php.

I have redirected domain.com/ to www.domain.com/ and I have changed all my internal backlinks so they point to / only. Google has picked up these changes. The only link remaining to index.php is an external one, but it doesn't show up in Google, even in an allinurl:www.domain.com/index.php.

At this recent toolbar update the PR for / increased to PR 5 as expected. However the PR for index.php has not decreased but is still at PR5, and I have no idea where this is coming from.

Would a redirect from index.php to / help resolve this situation? The previous thread explained how this could be done without causing a loop, but it involved renaming the default page. Are there any other solutions?

I have re-read the earlier threads and now understand how to do the redirect. My only problem now is deciding whether to do it. Perhaps having a seperate /index.php at PR 5 is beneficial, or is it better to combine the two?
