My site finally makes into Google Directory and has some extra text like other competeting sites.
Good news.

18 months and counting on a submission that
has been aknowledged as being "in the queue"

i no longer submit to dmoz.
it's another democratic nightmare.
i just wish they would die a decent death.
if google wants a directory as the basis
of their crawl, they should fund one from
their coffers.

Why? Even if a site hasn't managed to get in the ODP because it is still waiting in the queue, odds are if the site is any good that it'll have a link from at least one site listed in the ODP. Why would Google want to pay to achieve what they want when they can just instead crawl dmoz.org for free?

The context here was Googlebot using the ODP as being a good starting point to crawl the web. You are shifting that to "a directory that ordinary surfers will want to use." Much different. Yahoo has marginalized its directory to the point most ordinary surfers aren't even aware of it's existence. Which leads me to suspect Google would have no interest in funding creating a new directory. Just not profitable. As the ODP is free, for Google it is a bargain. Those people who use Google who think the ODP is like you describe above are free to ignore the Google directory.

Can anyone confirm that Google updated their directory recently? "Inquiring minds want to know!"

- in the SERPs, adding links to the category on some entries
- adding site listings to the Google directory itself
- making the site appear in the Directory Search.
There can be several months between each of these stages.

i question it's completeness, and emphasise it with
my personal experience.
the point is not whether any particular site can
get into dmoz on any given day, but rather, how
good is the crawl seed?
to paraphrase, are you as good as you can be?
i suggest that the answer is no, and further
suggest that an internal effort might be better.
presumably, google has adequate capital to fund
such an effort.

That's pretty awesome. How does it do that?
Google has developed new algorithms that dynamically reorder results by weighting the interests you enter in your profile. When you move the slider, it recalculates and rearranges the results to add more or less emphasis on your profile information.
I went to the second page of results and the slider slid off the page. Where is it?
Personalized results currently show up only on the first page after you do a search. The other results pages show standard Google results.
What do the colored balls next to my search results mean?
The balls indicate which results Google thought were more relevant to your search, based on the interests you entered in your profile. As you move the slider to the right to increase the degree of personalization, these results move closer to the top.
Psst. Googleguy. Might wanna get someone to renumber the answers on the FAQ....they all seem to be answering question number one. ;-)
I have a site about "topic". It is #1 for several keyword searches related to that topic. If I tick the personalise box associated with that topic and then personalise the result, the #1 listing disappears completely out of the results! If I set personalise back to minimum, then the #1 result returns.
I need to work out what I need to do to convince Google that this site really is about "topic" beyond all the content being about that topic, 90% of the incoming links being from sites about the same topic, or several very closely related topics (several are THE authority site), and 75% of the outgoing links being also closely related.
