My opinion here :)

I think that your choice of KW vs KW phrase really depends on if the terms are super popular. If you have lots of competition, single word KWs will be harder to rank on. For me, 2 and 3 word KW phrases are easier to rank for and bring in a significant amount of traffic.

As for how many times to repeat it on your page, well that seems to change as the algo's change. I would say that you write the content of the page and use them where it makes sense and doesn't make the page impossible for a surfer to read.

Are you talking page wise, I prefer two to three key phrases per page and then optimize for it. Reapeat as many times as demanded by the content or the articles not by the Search Engine.

Write for the user just polish it with a touch of SEO decoration, never over do it. around 9 to 11% is good.

isn't 9 to 11% a bit much. Seems like to content would get repetitive. I strive for 7% and this works in some areas.

What is other peoples chosen density and does it work for you?

Density? I never paid attention to it..rather write clearly and to the point so people can understand. Sure there are instances where the phrase has to be repeated 3-4 times on the page. Not doing so wouldn't make much sense or the reader wouldn't get the full understanding.

I hear that more and more people are using 2-3 keyword search terms when searching. This trend is reflected somewhat in my logs though I still see some single keyword searches. In my opinion, the more keywords you optimise for, the more targeted your page will be, making it easier to climb to the top of the rankings and the more likely that visitors finding your site will find what they're looking for.

Take for example the following people find your site:

Person A : searched for "Widget"
Person B : searched for "Blue Widgets in Yourtown"

You'll get higher conversions with Person B *and* have an easier time reaching the top of the rankings (note easier, not easy :P).
