PR goes up, rankings stay the same

Before the recent PR update my site had no PR despite a good amount of backlinks. My site is now showing a PR of what looks like 4 (anyway to tell for sure?, I cant read the bar).

Anyways, all my ranking positions have remained the same if not dropped. Overall, since the update my links from google have dropped significantly.

Any insight as to why?

DJ - Yes you can tell for sure - you need to mouse-over the bar, and it will do a 'tool tip' of the actual value

Nobody knows {except some Google employees} how much the PR affects the ranking in the SERPS. In my opinion, the PR that we see with the toolbar {you can check the actual number by moving the mouse cursor over it as mentioned above} is not the actual number used in the calculations.

Your site might show a 4, but it could be a high 4 or a low 4. Furthermore, whatever boost the PR gave your rankings was factored a few weeks ago. If you track your results with logs, you might have noticed a change in the number of pure google referrals a few weeks ago. In my case, I would think that some of the change was due to the addition of new pages, but I also think that higher PR on a good chunk of established pages might have had something to do with it.

In conclusion: The number we get to see is usually dampened and is a number that is already old. Changes in the SERPS hapen before changes in the PR are apparent.

My understanding is the recent PR and backlinks "update" was merely an update of what is visible, and probably reflects real updates dating from February. We would therefore not expect to see any changes in SERPS due to this "update". Also if there are changes in SERPS this is probably due to changes that are not yet visible in the toolbar or backlinks.

I judge this from (amongst other things) the fact that pages on my site put up earlier than 14 Feb received an approriate PR, but pages put up on 3 March which were PR0 before the "update" are still PR0.

In an earlier thread Googleguy hinted this was the way things worked, although he was not specific about dates. I got the impression that real updates were going on all the time.

During this update my new site finally received some PR. I thought that this would mean that my site got indexed. But it's still not there.
I searched for my-url.com and results are negative. How can I have a PR while not being indexed yet?

When my site was a pr4 it was getting 20-30 hits per day now [last pr update] pr6 it's getting 3-10 hits per day. Google's algo is nutty you cannot tell people who visit your site what your site is about if you do you'll get penalized. Another thing backlinks must not matter anymore as well as pagerank. When sites rank number 1 with 1-40 backlinks out of 3-5million results with only links as their content then something must be wrong!.
