Google spell checker

did you mean?

The situation:

I type in company product name - which isn't a word you find in any major dictionary and also not in google's dictionary apparently either.

So it recommends a competitor's product name instead.

The competitor product isn't a "normal" word either.

Any suggestions how we can stop this happening?

It wasn't a particular problem before but recently more and more people are putting our product name into google and may be getting directed elsewhere.

TIA

That's a good one for sure. This sure gives a new meaning for 'spell checker', misspellings go to your competitor! I'm sure one of the mods will have something to help.

Just out of interest, does it work both ways? i.e. when you search for the competitor's product name, does your product get a mention?

If yes, then I'd say it's fair.

If no, then you might email Google. It seems an unusual problem so you could get a personal reply (rather than boilerplate).

If you do email Google, be clear, concise and polite.

Kaled.

To be fair to Google, it seems to be a genuine mistake/suggestion as the two words are quite similar.

But still....

I have not seen this anomaly before and this explains it; similar spellings to begin with. A bit humorous nonetheless :) (So long as it's not my serp!)

There were several discussions about this earlier and I asked regarding this issue myself as well.

[webmasterworld.com...]

Mainly the outcome was that income links with anchor text and other websites mentioning this "new" word are the only way to get rid of this google behaviour.

Good luck.

Also,

as more and more people search for that word and more pages contain that word, google will tend to consider it as valid spelling

I have this problem all the time with my main keyword ( site in french ) ..
Type in the real correctly spelled word .."g" says ...are you sure you didn't mean ( same word without the "e" on the end of word ...and no its not like sometimes happens in french the "e" would be the "feminine form of the word" .....it doesn't have feminine form!).
The word spelling "g" thinks is correct goes straight to my one of my competitors.....this happens all the time in french searches on "g"...
Who can really beleive in the serps of a "semantically enhanced search engine " if the the thing can't spell words like the rest of the universe does!

Hello all:

I really like spell checkers! The wonderful
thing about these devices is that they EXPOSE
the ignorance of those who seek to conceal it.

If I get a message from **** saying that he/she
will MEAT me next TWOs day, guess what?

The spell checker is the friend of the
literate, not the enema.

Best wishes
