Hi all,

I am very much a newbie to SE marketing and would just like to know whether CONTENT.... ie lots and lots and lots of pages will make a difference in my SE ranking and hits/clicks.

My thinking is just that "the more pages you have, the more likely someone will see/click on that page".

Is that thinking correct? Also, if I have a link back to my homepage on each of these pages - will that make any difference. The reason why I ask this is because my competition has many pages (all valid) and if I check their number of links on google, they have thousands of links, but all the links are from their OWN pages - yet it seems like google sees it as "external links". They currently have a PR of 8!

Any advice for a newbie please....

ps. Also, I have recently started to exchange links with other relevant site, but they dont show on google yet. I have done this about 1 month ago. All external sites have/had a PR of at least 4 (more likely 6). How long does google take to pick this up?

Hi MustBeFirst,

Welcome to WebMasterWorld!

I'm pretty new here too so I'd get a few other peoples opinion as well but this is what I think...

Content does matter.

Read Brett's 26 steps to website success. Content is a running theme [webmasterworld.com ]

Having a link back to your home page is beneficial. Firstly it gives users a simple way to return to the home page. Secondly (I think this is right) Google adds value to your site for each of those links but how much, I don't know.

Keep exchanging links and adding copy to your site. If you want a PR8 you'll have a whole lot of work to do. Try going for more niche terms instead of generic ones. Perhaps the competition on those terms is a little less fierce.

The more content the better (Brett goes into a lot of detail).

Good luck!

Well, yes and no.

If you are targeting only one or 2 keywords or phrases you can put them all on one page and get it to #1 by attaining incoming links. I have done this once very quickly by accident.

BUT - if you are trying to deliver your message far and wide you will surely want to be found for all permutations of related keywords that people search on. The key to being found is more keywords on your pages (i.e content). And don't forgret the foreign languages too!

There is a minor technical benefit in having many pages (each page increases your site's share of the total internet by a tiny fraction and hence boosts your overall site pagerank score), but content for content's sake is a bad thing. It bloats your site and removes the focus from your key topic. I'd only recommend building it if it directly relates to the key message you want to impart to the masses :)

Do lots of pages help?

As others have said, they can help.

But it may be important to have something worth saying on the page before building it. In otherwords the message should justify the page.

And to some degree ranking in a search engine becomes less difficult if each of those pages is aimed at a different search term or phrase.

"widget" might be hard to get to number one ranking.

"red widget" might be a little easier.

"red widget parts" even easier.

"red widget wingnut parts"..... well you get the idea, I'm sure.

So if your topic can justify the additional pages, it may well be worth the effort.
