Using a 404 redirect when you move a page

This is kind of a continuation from a previous post I made today, but really a different subject so I thought a new thread best.

I am redesigning and restructuring an large site already heavily spidered and ranked by google. Many of my pages and current links will move. What is the best way to limit 404 errors. I am intending to do a redirect to the home page.

How does google deal with these? Does it just ignore them? What If I redirected to the moved content? Am I just going to have to sit tight and wait until G respiders all my moved content and structure?

Thoughts?

I may be wrong cos I'm quite new to this and someone please feel free to correct me but I think you should use a

300 - Page permantly redirected

Well thats what I did anyway.

Usually a 301 is the correct response if a page is moved. That will also send an human visitor to the correct new page, so the old url will still work.
