linking from non-profit subdomain to money making main domain

does linking from subdomain to main domain count as external link?

hi

i plan to write much of useful content for my visitors. my idea is to create a subdomain what is nonprofit; and is pure informative content to the different widgets.

the question is
- does google consider the subdomain as an external link?
- do i risk any penalty because the links come from the same server (ip address)?
- or does it make more sense to create more sites insite the main domain without using a subdomain?
any thoughts on that?

Are you intending to be linking back and forth between the domain and the sub-domain, or would it be just one way linking?

One of my top competitors has less than 100 inbounds to main site and about 600 sub-domains all linking to each other with some outbounds from the main site in to them but no return link from subs to homepage. He/She does extremely well with the subs.

P.S. I hate him/her. :-P

hi marcia

i was thinking of just giving a link from the subdomain to the main domain. what i don't know is, if it would be useful to do reciprocal linking.

seems that my topic isn't interesting enough - i like to add why i want to do it that way because i really need some opinions or knowledge from you on this.

my site sells widgets and is created with a logical structure. the site design is given and follows a corporate identity and i do not want to just add pages for seo purpose and destroying in the same time a webdesign with a good usability. the site is doin' fine so far but to stay in competition i probably need more keywords/phrases to be competitive in the market. i am not using this potential at the moment.

i link between sub domains and main domains and do well. However some people who have been at this along time advise that it is not a good strategy long term. Try having your homepage as a sorting office to the different sections. Inbound links to your domain would generally come into the homepage alone. Subdomains also split pr opportunity.
