Hey all,

From reading the forums here on and off over the past couple of months I know there is a lot of really smart people here, so I have a question for you all.

Recently, as you all probably know, Google has added 1 billion pages to their index. My site finally got listed and i was excited to see it, unfortunately though, sometimes when i search for my keywords, I don't see my site.

It seems like my page was in the index, then taken back out.. etc.

I have searched with my keywords a few times since they updated, and about 50% of the time my site shows up.

Does anyone know why it isnt showing up at times? I would like to thank you all in advance for helping me out.

Hi Chris,

Google operates many different data centers. When a new index is built, it has to be distributed across all of those locations.

If you weren't in a previous index, but you are in the new one, your site will come and go during the time the new index is being distrbuted.

That happens because the actual data center you connect to when you do a search isn't always the same. So when google.com is resolving to a location that has the new data, you show up. And when it resolves to a dc that doesn't have the new data, you disappear.

I think I'm getting something similar to you. I had a new site added just before the update started last week. I think it was Friday.

First it had just the URL, next day it had the title and description, next day it was spidered and picked up an updated title tag. I was pretty happy since it happened over about 3 or 4 days.

As of Wedensday, I was showing the old title. Thursday I went back to just the URL. I was waiting for it to disappear all together! Today, Friday, I'm alternating between the URL and the old title tag. Maybe tomorrow or over the weekend I'll come back to the new title? I hope!

For the one day that I had the new title I was pretty happy with the traffic so I definitely want it back!

Okay great. So now that google has to distribute the new index to each data center, about how long is that supposed to take? a couple of weeks?

If you have been paying close attention to the posts here for the past couple of months, I would wager a bet that most here have not seen the SERPs settle since November (florida). :-)

fscanf, like WebGuerrilla said, not a problem. Your site will bounce in and out for a few weeks before it becomes solid. Be patient, at least you know Google has found it and it's in the pipeline.

Spend your time in the interim adding pages, content, and generally improving the site... then when you're getting crawled regularly, Google will like what it sees and maybe reward you accordingly.
