More Keywords - Random Choice for Google?

Do equal keywords become unequal in results?

Hi,

We have been building a site (since 1 year) that covers a niche market and try to give it an equal optimization for 4 similar areas - all four of them are equally important for us.

Invented Examples:

China newts (or newts in China etc)
China animals (or animals China, China animals etc)
Hongkong newts
Tibet newts

we have really a lot of unique content for each of the four items, no mirror sites, two asp databases (one for newts and the second for salamanders:), PR6, 300 subpages in total, 450 backlinks (many of them authority) ... but alas

... after Florida only unimportant results remained high, the rest was wiped, than it started to be better and better in January (2nd-3rd page) for all 4 areas and Now after the last update first area ranks #1-20, second area around #20-50 and third+fourth (actually the crucial ones ouch ouch) #230-280. I do not get why it got so dumped.

Among inner backward link texts the first area has a bit bigger share, but the other ones are also represented.

Does similar thing happen to you? How come that two keywords which get almost equal treatment by the webmaster appear in very very different positions in results? Let us assume there is no penalty on the site by Google.

Is there a way how to influence that all important areas go up, besides creating more and more backlinks targeted on the areas which do miserably?

Should we make four pages connected together instead of one huge site? Can you give me any hint about the algorithm?

AND: Does Google give lower weight to pages which have several dead links or new language versions which are not fully developed and refer to main English page instead to non-existent (not yet translated)foreign language subpages?

Cheers.
