switching domains

ok, ok, i should know all this by now, but...

...i just want to make sure i have all my bases covered.

i have a client who wants to change his business name (and his domain). he has a lot of phone-book ads with the old address, though. also, he'll probably be on the same physical server, just switching domains.

i should be able to just change the httpd.conf file to have both point to the new domain for about 8 months until he can change all the phone book ads, no?

will google be ok with forwarding from olddomain.com to newdomain.com for that long a period?

p.s. mods feel free to move this to webmaster or other topic if it shouldn't be here. my big concern is it dropping out of google. although, with yahoo SERPs changing, maybe it's a more general question. thanks again.
