First time I saw 2.3

Hi everybody,

today I found

GoogleBot/2.3 : 64.68.89.188

accessing our domains. That IP resolves to exodus, but the IP BEFORE in the traceroute shows Google as the owner.

Last time I looked (about 3 hours ago :-) there was a 2.1 as the version number. Is this the new spider?

P!

Well, the IP's Google's and I see it hitting just a small handful of domains (not really crawling them yet).

Why straight to 2.3? (no Googlebot/2.2) Also, why GoogleBot not Googlebot?

Interesting find pontiflex.

Me too; a bunch of IPs fetching URLs in a Googlebot-like fashion. Just very sparsely.

My best guess: the software that would have been Googlebot/2.2 was found to be wanting, whereas 2.3 was deemed adequate. Remember, this is just internal Google stuff, and not something they market, and thus would want to name it in a way that made sense for consumers.
