Link to Page vs. Link to Site

To what extent does Google differentiate?

I've seen many posts advising that one-way links are better than reciprocal links.

Yet an outgoing link is not likely to point to exactly the same page from which the incoming link eminates (especially where specific links pages are used).

Does this mean that Google takes entire domains into account when analyzing the reciprocality (or otherwise) of links? While I may like a link from a page on yourdomain.com, should I try to avoid giving you a link from any page on mydomain.com?

That's an excellent question, I have been wondering the same thing.

I would guess that knowing that, SE's would use link from mydomain to link from yourdomain as reciprocal because most don't link to the same URL back and forth.

But knowing that G for instance treats each page seperately, it's hard to say. And then in that case, doesn't it seem wise to use [resources.yourdomain.com...] as your link directory? because subdomains are almost always considered different domains entirely.

Let me know if you've found a definitive answer.

I think they count individual links. That's why sometimes subpages (with a higher PR) appear higher in the SERPs. Another reason is that it frequently happens that subpages have a higher PR than the index-page.

Steve,

When you say no, are you saying that links are only seen as reciprocal if they are from url1 to url2 and from url2 to url1 or are you just saying no as in reciprocal links are fine?
