Hello to all. I find this site a great resource.

I have a question:
I have a small/medium site 2000 pages in google index.
I wanted to split the site into several domains: directory.mysite.com, forum.mysite.com etc.
Now it is www.mysite.com/forum/.
I have seen the new google algorithm and I do not know if it is such a good idea.
As I see it:
- advantage: you can get more that 2 listings in the serps for a specific search;
- disadvantage: you have less indexed pages;
What is your opinion.

Hi bobu, and welcome to Webmaster World.

I wouldn't call 2000 pages a small/medium site!
In any event I think there are advantages to splitting it up in different domains.
For one thing, if you do get hit by a Google filter you only get hit on one domain most likely.
It also gives you flexibility and allows you to interlink for whatever advantage that may yield.

My feeling is that it's just better to have a little network instead of a big site, it's sort of like teamwork as opposed to one superstar player.

A really good question.

Google representatives said it was better to have one domain than many small domains.

On the other hand sub-domains still seem to give some advantage.

So maybe Google wished we would all have one domain but their alo preferrs many domains?

Thank you for the answer.

When I said small/medium site I meant: small among all the internet sites and medium among the Romanian sites.

I can see that is a question of personal preference if you split a site or not. The both have advantages and disadvantages. The question is which the best is (the majority opinion wins).
