Difference in link command results

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but can anyone explain the difference between...

[google.com...]

10,800 results

and

[google.com...]

39,700 results

(In the second search query there is a space before the www)

Using a space between link: and the URL is a normal search, i.e. it shows results for 'link:' and the URL while link:www.domain.com is showing backlinks.

Pages that have www.domain.com on there pages are not necessarily backlinks. Also, pages with backlinks not necessarily have the URL on there page.

I am sorry, I am not as sharp as some of you guys, I still dont understand the difference between:

link:www.domainname.com and link: www.domainname.com.

link:www.domain.com is a special command that will check links pointing at www.domain.com - no matter what the anchor text reads, pages with a link such as <a href="htp://www.mydomain.com">special domain</a> will be listed.

On the other hand, searching for link: www.domain.com will not be recognised as a special command, and google will search for the two words: link and www.domain.com - and pages with the text www.domain.com and/or link would be returned.

In the first example, pages with hyperlinks pointing at www.mydomain.com are returned, in the second, pages simply with the text www.domain.com are returned.
