What's the benefit of people using different C-class IP's on related websites they own, and interlinking them all together?

Not saying anybody's using it but:

2.1 Detecting Host Affiliation
We define two hosts as affiliated if one or both of the following is true:
-They share the same first 3 octets of the IP address.
-The rightmost non-generic token in the hostname is the same.

Thanks for the article, but that doesn't explain why people would use different C-class IP's.

Is it because if one site is banned, then the others won't (because they don't share the same IP)?

If you had a main site which you wanted to promote, it would make sense for the satelite sites, which link to the core site, to have different IP addresses so that the SE doesn't think the satelites are affiliated with the core site.
