How did my PR get so high?

I have a commercial web site. Google shows 5 links to me. My PR is 5. A competitor's site has 685 links to them. Their PR is 6.

How in the heck did my PR get so high? Some months its even 6. I know I don't have that many incoming links, either. And to top it off, I use a 302 redirect from www.example.com to store.example.com/directory/index .

PageRank doesn't just look at how many links you have, but also at who links to the pages that link to you, and so on recursively. So just one link from a PR7 page will often give PR 6, while 100 links from PR3 pages would normally give PR 3 or PR4.

To learn about PageRank flow, I recommend "The Anatomy of a Hypertextial Search Engine" and "The PageRank Citation Ranking: Bringing Order to the Web", both by Google's founders Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page. PageRank works in largely the same way as it did in the 'Backrub' days.
